Helping you create a cleaner, healthier life one step at a time
Makeover your makeup & more
January 10, 2019
As part of converting yourself and your household to a cleaner, toxic-free way of life there are many areas to tackle. This can be overwhelming. I recommend two approaches: 1. Replace what you use with better, clean, non-toxic alternatives and 2. Switch the things you use DAILY first (since you have the most exposure here).
While you can do some googling and research on your own, here are 1-2 recommendations for you to avoid the overwhelm, switch to something non-toxic and products that I've found to be really great.
Beautycounter's makeup has been improving the past 2 years, if you tried it and weren't a fan, try it again. The eye shadow and blush powders are so creamy and last forever, and the Lip Intense lipstick has bolder color and longer staying power. My favorites are: Tint Skin Foundation and Get the Look Set for complete makeup overhaul
An initial word about safe, non-toxic deodorant. It may take awhile to find something that works for you. And what works may not always work. And something might work as a daily wear but be no good for workouts. Unfortunately there isn't too much you can do to know what will work for you and your body chemistry - however, if you're looking for something with more power activated charcoal as an ingredient seems to be the way to go. Here are the non-toxic deodorants that I like and seem to work best for the majority of folks....a place to get started at least!
The biggest adjustment you need to make here is the idea of foam...you're really not going to get good foam in a toothpaste that is SLS free (soduim laruel/laureth sulfate free). Charcoal toothpaste is also really in right now, it's great to use but a little messy and be prepared to stain your toothbursh. I have a bamboo one I use just for the charcoal toothpaste.
Note: I pretty much order all of my toothpaste and a lot of other household items through Thrive Market. Check the site out, it does require an annual membership - but if you're busy and like things delivered to your door, it's cheaper than Whole Foods and much more convenient for healthy non-toxic products and food/snacks/pantry staples...and now wine!
4. Nail Polish
There is a lot of terrible stuff in nail polish. You want something that is 5,7,or 9-free meaning it doesn't have Formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, and camphor in it. Can't find a nail salon near you that carries these brands, then just bring it with you when you go! Also check out my friends at Crunchy Cocktail Hour and their podcast all about nail polish, episode #47! If you like them, shameless plug here also check out the one where they interviewed me :)
Cote - Nail Polish and Treatments 100% free from formaldehyde, toluene, DBT, formaldehyde resin, camphor, TPHP, xylene, ethyl tosylamide/epoxy resin, parabens, and gluten.
