Get Better Hair!

Haircare was not first on my list of products to switch when I started to switch to safer personal care products - I figured, hey it's not on my head that long and then I wash it out - it's not like I'm eating it, or slathering it all over my skin to be absorbed.  There have been two articles posted by NPR and Times Magazine that highlighted the dangers of the ingredients in our hair care products.  Prefer to watch a video, check out this 12 minute speech from Gregg Renfrew (Beautycounter's … [Read more...]

Healthy Toxin Free (Clean) Laundry

Part of my clean living adventure has included cleaning up my cleaning supplies and laundry detergent.  I listened to this awesome podcast that told the story of Molly Suds.  It's a pretty sad story, but created a really awesome product. I love their tagline, "the wise choice for people against toxins." I chose the laundry powder because it's more economical, and I picked the one that has the peppermint scent with peppermint essential oils. I currently use Dr. Bronner's peppermint … [Read more...]

Vegetable cookies?

If you have a picky eater (ehm, toddler) in your life, chances are he or she may go through phases of not wanting to eat vegetables.  They mostly will be open to eating cookies, so as a creative mom I put together a "paleo" real food version of a cookie with some veggies snuck in there.  These are great as a breakfast too, based with almond meal they are full of protein and good fats and have just a little bit of REAL maple syrup to add some sweetness.  We don't eat a lot of sweet in our … [Read more...]

What kind of container is that?!

So I'm one of the fringe crazies that is trying to get rid of plastic in my life. As a mom of a toddler that's pretty hard to do. I've started with food and drink vessels - we use the Kiki Pura cups and glass or regular plates and bowls at home. But when packing for school that is a different animal...since they won't accept glass I had to branch out and try some other things. I'll share with you the run down of what I've tried, the pros and cons of each and where I found it! Roll up your … [Read more...]

What the F?! Fragrance is a four letter word

Yes, I know that fragrance actually has 9 letters, not 4, but the point here is that fragrance is actually something that is bad for your health.  On top of that it's in virtually everything we use - lotion, face and personal care products, household cleaners, laundry detergent, dryer sheets, perfume, candles, shampoo, sunscreen...   You see "fragrance" listed on virtually everything, and unfortunately this seemingly benign ingredient is anything but, and in fact it can be … [Read more...]

Don’t stink, check out these natural deodorant options that actually work.

This article has been floating around my Facebook feed for sometime, and I was reluctant to open it - mostly because it has a picture of Old Spice deodorant on the front and I knew that I wasn't going to agree with the recommendations inside the article.  In my quest to convert to healthier, safer products finding a deodorant with acceptable ingredients was easier than I thought....it's finding one that actually works that is the hard part! Based on the article above, I am going to give the … [Read more...]

Do you have formaldehyde in your face lotion?

Living in the United States, a developed country, you would never think that that you would have to watch out for buying unsafe products in the store. Unfortunately the personal care industry the personal care products industry is not well regulated, there's only one law that was passed in 1938 where a total of 11 ingredients are banned by the FDA from being used and products - compared to the 1,400 by the EU you'll realize how paltry our regulations are. Since then there have been over … [Read more...]

Getting ready for cold weather

There are a few things that I start to change up once the leaves start to change color and the weather starts to cool down (is this ever happening this Fall here outside of Philly?!). First my cooking routine changes, and I go back to making a pot of soup or chili almost every week.  I love having soup as my go-to lunch, so I have fewer leftover dinner lunches and many soup and salad lunches.  When I make soup, I mean starting with bones, making my own broth, and then adding in veggies … [Read more...]

Thrive Market – A Fantastic Resource

I have had quite a few conversations lately about Thrive Market and what I like about it.  I am a huge fan of Thrive Market - I think that they have a great social mission (when you sign up for a membership they donate a membership to a family in need) and selfishly they have great prices and delivery to my door!  I probably order every 3 - 5 weeks or so.  Here's what I find myself frequently purchasing, and then there are lots of fun new things that pop up and free things that are included … [Read more...]

What’s with all the hype on sunscreen?

Yeah, it's summer - slow to come here in the Philly area but it raged in with a 90+ degree 5 day heatwave over Memorial Day so we were all quickly reminded about the importance of sunscreen after spending time outdoors!  There has been a lot of hype and articles out lately about sunscreen, so I thought I'd share some of the resources and my thoughts. I didn't give sunscreen that much of a thought until I had a baby, and had to put sunscreen on him.  The first year, he was too little, … [Read more...]
